Here's a peek into the process of designing and printing Henrietta Street, available in my shop here. The inspiration came from a photograph of a terrier in the wonderful 14 Henrietta Street.
Sketching my version with Copic markers, playing with contrasting colour combinations. Copic markers have a subtle transparency that helps me envision how a print will layer together. The finished sketch is taken to the lightbox to trace onto newsprint. A stencil is then cut out from the newsprint. The blocky shape on the left is the piece of paper left over from the stencil.
First layer printed and drying. Setting up takes some time, but the actual printing only takes a couple of minutes.
Second (top) layer printed in a soft blue-grey, mixed from acrylics and acrylic screen medium. This detail layer is made from a screen block stencil which is hand painted onto the screen to retain the mark making qualities of the sketch.
Finished prints are set out to dry, then checked for consistency. The best ones make the cut, and are editioned and signed.
