October 2024
At the end of August, Iona Roberts and I delivered a three day series of workshops on behalf of the Glasgow School of Art, where we are both Open Studio tutors. We travelled down to Knowle Hall, near Bridgwater, Somerset. Knowle Hall is the UK cultural centre for the Yew Chung Yew Wah School Network (YCYW). Pupils from the Shanghai Gubei and Zhejiang Tongxiang schools stayed on site for their UK Art Study Tour, which included portfolio and statement advice, art school visits and cultural immersion activities alongside our workshops.
For our workshops, we focussed on the concertina sketchbook: a format and way of working that would be new and beneficial to students developing an art school application. We drew from the landscape (natural and man-made), explored narrative and encouraged pupils to document their process. Here are a selection of my own sketches and photographs.
