The Herald (2025) 'Scotland's standout winter exhibitions to see now'

Beneath the Trees brings together work by B.B. Gray, Joanie Jack, and Christine Novosel, created in response to the 1930s song Teddy Bear’s Picnic. The exhibition blends playful nostalgia with a subtle darker edge, drawing on the contrasts found in folklore and fairytales. Elaborate sculptural pieces, imagined creatures, and atmospheric landscapes invite visitors into a woodland world shaped by the song’s enduring charm. Unlike the song’s warning, it’s perfectly safe to come alone to join the gathering. The exhibition programme includes two workshops: Wreath Making Workshop with wildflower florist Liz Gray and Paper Creatures: Puppet and mask workshop with Christine Novosel.

[Christine] has created a cast of articulated puppet characters from collaged, printed and painted paper. Much of her work explores how people relate to animals, how we characterise them, and how we tell our human stories through them.
