Broken Telephone was the first exhibition of a collaboration between myself and Claire Adams, Liane Clarkson, B.B. Gray and Iona Roberts. We are all continuing education tutors, and are interconnected by past or present roles within the Open Studio at the Glasgow School of Art. The idea for this group exhibition developed over a week of lunch breaks, in between teaching summer day classes. We are very different, working in a range of areas spanning ceramics, textiles, painting, drawing and illustration. The work started with a chain of text and image prompts, which is the source material and starting point for the exhibited artworks. Through their own lens, each artist engaged with the prompts, however closely or loosely, to create their own artwork. The artists also wrote chain letters to each other that reflect on their artistic process and how making fits into everyday life. The resulting exhibition was an exploration of how distinct voices overlap and come together.
